Litha 2026 - Celebrating the Summer Solstice
✦ What is Litha? ✦
Litha - also known as Midsummer, Alban Heruin, or the Summer Solstice - is one of the eight Great Sabbats on the Wheel of the Year. Celebrated around June 21st in the Northern Hemisphere, it marks the longest day and shortest night of the year. The Sun God stands at the peak of his strength, radiant and triumphant, while the Goddess, heavy with the promise of new life, smiles upon a world in full bloom.
It is a day of paradox: the height of light, and the beginning of its retreat. From this moment forward, the days grow shorter. The wheel, ever turning, reminds us that all things are cyclical - that even the brightest peak carries within it the seed of the coming dark. This is not a cause for grief, but for deep, grateful celebration.
✦ The Magic of Midsummer ✦
Fire is the heart of Litha. Traditionally, great bonfires were lit on hilltops as the sun set - their flames mirroring the solar energy of the day, purifying all who leapt over them. The higher the fire, the greater the vitality received. Even today, lighting candles at dusk carries this ancient intention: to honour the Sun, to draw his warmth into your body and home, and to burn away what no longer serves you.
Water, too, holds special power at Litha. Rivers and lakes touched by the solstice sun were believed to carry healing and cleansing energy. Bathing in natural water - or simply washing your face in the morning light - is a beautiful act of ritual purification.
Herbs gathered at Midsummer are said to hold their greatest magical potency: St. John's wort, chamomile, lavender, elderflower, rose, fennel, verbena, frankincense, and myrrh. Stones aligned with Litha include amber, carnelian, citrine, golden beryl, and sunstone - all carrying the warmth and radiance of the Sun.
✦ Celebrating Litha in 2026 ✦
Whether you celebrate in a forest clearing with a bonfire, or quietly at your altar in a city apartment - Litha welcomes you. The sabbat is not about grand gestures. It is about presence: feeling the sun on your skin, tasting ripe summer fruit, breathing in the scent of flowers, and allowing yourself to be fully, joyfully alive.

Here are some ways to mark the solstice this year:
- Rise with the sun. The first rays of the solstice sunrise are considered sacred. Even a few minutes of quiet watching - coffee in hand, bare feet on the earth - is a powerful act of reverence.
- Gather or buy fresh flowers and herbs. Decorate your altar and home with chamomile, lavender, and St. John's wort. Make a simple wreath to wear or hang above your door as a talisman through the year.
- Feast on summer abundance. Ripe berries, stone fruits, honey, mead, lemonade - eat and drink in celebration of the Earth's generosity.
- Light a fire. A bonfire if you can, a fireplace if you have one, or a ring of candles on your altar. Let the flame be your focal point for the evening ritual.
- Cleanse your space. Smoke your home with herbs or incense to clear the energy of the past months and welcome the light of the new season.
✦ A Simple Litha Ritual ✦
This ritual can be performed alone or with loved ones, indoors or outside. It is designed around the three sacred tools of Litha: flame, scent, and oil.
You will need:
- Your Litha Beeswax Candles - a set of 12 handmade candles in the colours of the sabbat, each burning for one hour
- Your Litha Oil - a blend crafted to awaken joy, freedom, health, and strength
- Your Litha Incense - loose herbs and resins to burn on charcoal, filling your space with the scent of midsummer
The ritual:
- Prepare your space. Clear your altar. Place the candles in a circle or in a line - however feels right to you. Set your incense coal to light.
- Anoint your candles. Take the Litha Oil and rub a small amount onto each candle, moving from the base upward (drawing energy toward you). As you do, hold the intention of what you wish to call in: joy, vitality, love, abundance, clarity. The oil was crafted in accordance with the phases of the moon and the energies of the season - trust that it carries this intention already.
- Light the incense. Place a pinch of the Litha Incense on your lit coal. Let the smoke rise and fill the room. If you are indoors, open a window to allow the old energy to leave. Breathe deeply. Let the scent ground you in the present moment.
- Light the candles. One by one, light your beeswax candles. With each flame, speak aloud (or in your heart) one thing you are grateful for, one thing you are releasing, and one intention for the second half of the year.
- Sit in the light. There is no rush. Let the candles burn. Journal, meditate, or simply be. The God and Goddess are joyful today - allow yourself to share in that joy.
- Close the ritual. When you are ready, thank the Sun, the Earth, and the turning Wheel. Extinguish the candles safely. You may continue burning one candle each evening until the set is complete - a beautiful way to carry the Litha energy through the coming weeks.

✦ A Note from Us ✦
We have been celebrating the Wheel of the Year together for many years now - through different countries, different seasons of our own lives, and always with deep love for this practice. Litha is one of our favourite sabbats. There is something about the long golden evenings, the smell of warm earth and flowers, the feeling that the world is simply full - that never gets old.
We made these Litha tools with that feeling in mind. The beeswax candles are handmade, each one poured with care. The oil and incense were crafted by our friends at Antiquis Mixturis, prepared in magical time and in accordance with the moon. We hope they bring the same warmth to your celebration that they bring to ours.
Happy Litha, dear ones. May your fire burn bright. 🌞
