The Serpent sheds its skin and renews itself like the Moon, symbolizing the wisdom and power of the ancient goddesses. Ishtar and Hecate are traditionally drawn with Snakes in their hands. The Snake is also a symbol of fertility, passion, healing, and the underworld. In totemism, the Snake is a guide to higher levels of knowledge of rebirth and transmutation.
